SOTD: Parfum Sacre

The weather is shockingly cool outside after thinking of rose fragrances I like and would be appropriate for this weather, the only possible conclusion was Caron's Parfum Sacre, a gorgeous dusky myrrh laced rose. Sublime in cool weather.

SOTD: Un Lys

Today I will be testing out Serge Luten's Un Lys. Yesterday I sampled it but not on skin that was clean (Iris Taizo had been there first) I liked what I smelled though and seemed like something nice for a long day; baking berry pudding cake, work, dinner with family and boyfriend, and movie with boyfriend. I'm thinking I might test out Donna Karan Gold later on this week to do a comparison. It is the time for lily scents. I suspect I will be putting on something different for dinner though because Un Lys has a notoriously short life span. Possibly Euphoria or Magnetism.

The cooking continues...

So March shall officially be known as the month of risotto, since my last posting on risotto I have made risotto twice, did a repeat of Nigella Lawson's Lemon Risotto, and then just this last week I made Nigella's Chedder Risotto which can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandyandallen/2322935316/ which was quite yummy liberally dosed with valentina hot sauce, yet while eating it I couldn't help but think about baconing it up. Next time I'm making some crispy bits of bacon to go on top of it. In the continuation of my rice love I also tried out a recipe for saffron rice pudding; the flavor was good, but I didn't like the texture, the quest continues... Also, if you are like me and rather enjoy making fresh homemade bread, I offer you this awesome whole wheat recipe from http://www.aminglingoftastes.com/2007/03/fabulously-simple-whole-wheat-breadno.html This dark bread has gorgeous sweetness and flavor from molasses that is perfect for butter or cream cheese, love the scent of it toasting, and did I mention it is super easy?
And I finally tested out a chocolate pudding recipe i have been wanting to try for ages http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/coconut-chocolate-pudding-recipe.html Incredibly rich and exotic, highly recommended to those you love 340 Phinney's Coconut Curry bar and Vosges Naga bar.

SOTD: Iris Taizo

So about a month ago I got a sample of Parfumerie Generale's Iris Taizo and well I tried it a couple of times but I admit at those times my nose was slightly stuffy, but each time I the scent that came to my nose was heavily spiced civety amber (which is something I am just not into these days) and well it turns out my nose wasn't wrong even when slightly stuffy. I admit now I can smell a slight hint of powder that must come from the iris, the civet quality is most definately there in its pungency, but over all this scent is amber on me. While I don't abhor it, Iris Taizo is most definately not me; which I am quite happy with because the price on Parfumerie Generale's scents went up quite a bit.

SOTD: Omnia

Today is a day for comfort scents, the weather once again has become cool and there is hints of overcast in the sky. So I am going with one of my ultimate comfort scents: Bvlgari Omnia, this one doesn't get too much love because I believe it features a musk that many are ansomiac too. This is when it works for a wonderful creamy woody slightly spicy musk that surrounds the wearer in a nice cloud of warmth. To keep the comfort going after work I suspect I will be baking bread. Hope everyone one has a lovely day.

SOTD: Un Bois Vanille

After wearing so many spring scents I had the sudden need for something sweet, most of my scents seem to much on th heavy hitter side or too gourmand, but then the wonderful resinous Un Bois Vanille reached out.

SOTD: Coco Madamoiselle pure parfum

Going with the one of modern marvels of fragrances today: Chanel's Coco Madamoiselle. This scent in pure parfum remindes me of orange trees; ironically the notes listed do not feature orange, but the blending of bergamot, vetiver, and patchouli achieves the instant image of orange trees to me.

SOTD: Bvlgari pour femme and Happy Easter!

Happy Easter Everyone! Should you wonder where the heck the rabbit comes from, well it is a symbol of fertility for the goddess Eostra, another symbol of her's is the egg. And as you can see she also had a direct part in the naming of the holiday, Eostra=Easter. Going with the sunny happy Bvlgari pour femme as I visit family.

SOTD: Chanel 22

There is no getting arount it: It is gorgeous outside! And tomorrow it is even supposed to be better; I have been looking forward to this weekend for so long it isn't even funny, after working all last weekend, the idea of a shopping day is really luxurious. A big part of this is last year i went through a phase of getting rid of a lot of clothes (this was in Autumn) so naturally I got rid of a lot of warm weather clothing and now well I don't have any warm weather clothing. My destination today is H&M, Sephora, and Ikea (still need house stuff). To go with gorgeous luxurious day I am wearing Chanel 22; which is dry aldehyde white floral perfection (honestly I really wish there was more fragrances that used aldehydes and white flowers together, the aldehydes tame the white florals and bring a gorgeous sparkle).

SOTD: Kimono Rose

So spring has truly begun and now I am bringing out the wonderfully effervescent Kimono Rose by The Thymes. This truly is a happy scent featuring berries, jasmine, and clementine; this is a balmy spring morning with dew on the greenery.

SOTD: Ava Luxe Rasa

Today I am going with Ava Luxe's lovely Rasa. This is a lovely musk that highlights a dusky rose which is supported by what I could swear is myrrh and musk. There is something wonderfully exotic and dark blue about this scent to me.

Sweet For Spring

Now as lovely as flowers and greenery are in spring fragrances, there is the reality that I lean towards fragrances on the oriental side which usually have some sort of sweet undercurrent. Now of late I have been thinking about sweet fragrances that work in spring, because as it turns out spring seems to be a hard time to wear sweet fragrances (some how summer is easier even if the weather is warmer). So I have come up with a list of three fragrances that work in spring weather that lean on the sweet side yet complement the weather:

1. With Love by Hilary Duff : There is something perfect about this lovely creamy milky amber to go with cooler spring days. The scent contains enough oriental elements to fulfill the need for this type of scent, yet is light enough to never over power. It has a lovely cafe au lait quality with just a hint of zesty fruit to keep it from becoming to sweet.

2. Pearl by Sage Machado : This scent has always reminded me of petals on the ground, clouds, and scent of steam and incense intermixed. It brings about a meditative quality with the use of clean musk and sandalwood, but remains wonderfully comforting with a lovely vanilla that is not gourmand.

3. Kuumba Made Vanilla Musk : There is something rather pink and opalescent about this scent. It is wonderfully feminine but at the same time very relaxed, I will admit it reminds of pastries filled with almond but decorated with floral designs, but I will say this now it is not a gourmand scent.

SOTD: With Love

Today is cloudy and so back to something comforting and sweet: With Love. I still can't believe especially with my snobbery that I like this little fragrance represented by Hillary Duff, but it really is good. I suppose I must remind myself that really it was perfumer that created this scent, but the reality is image does mean something when it comes to fragrances, I mean look at the the world of niche fragrances? I just remind myself: If it smells good it smells good (okay I will never wear a Paris Hilton fragrance).

SOTD: Baghari

There something boudouresque about aldehydes, whenever I wear a scent featuring aldehydes it makes me feel like a woman who has spent the evening/morning sitting around luxuriously in her boudoir primping for hours with an elegant slowness wearing an extravagent robe. Baghari is the sunny peach of aldehydic scents, it is perfect for spring with a sunny opening and mild sweet middle of violets, the finally though is quite interesting on me with an amber that melds with my skin taking on a hint strangely of light cinnamon.

SOTD: Kuumba Made Vanilla Musk

My mondays are spent studying so I often go with comforting scents (those that blend in with my own scent) or scents that I perceive to be intelligent (Infusion d'Iris) or scents that I perceive to intellectually stimulating because of their energy (citrus scents). Today I am going with comfort and a scent I have not worn in ages: Kuumba Made Vanilla Musk. This one has a great deal of similarity to Lea St. Barth and Sage Machado's Pearl, the musk is light and delicate, the vanilla also light with hints of cherried heliotrope and almond, yet the drydown also has hints of civet and amber. Truthfully this scent really should get much more attention but I suspect because it is cheap and usually found at health food stores it is dismissed.

SOTD: Infusion d'Iris

Once again work today, but luckly it is sunny outside, I must sound like a repeat offender with this constant choice for SOTD, but it is just lovely: Prada Infusion d'Iris. I can't escape its lovely tastefulness or that it is perfect for the season. It is a smart scent that never enters rigid.

SOTD: Sage Machado Pearl

Sadly I have to work the whole entire weekend so I am choosing to go with a comforting scent, Sage Machado's Pearl. What is wonderful about this scent is that it is one of the few non-gourmand vanilla's out there, the sandalwood and musk perfectly balance it, making it a perfectly fluffy white cloud of scent.

Comfort in Spring: Risotto

It's occurred to me that lately I have been cooking a lot of rice comfort foods, last month I made the ever comforting arroz con leche (this recipe a variation of Mexican rice pudding), but this month I have found my self making the savory comforting creamy side of rice: Risotto. Risotto is the perfect comfort food for spring, it is creamy and nourishing, but not heavy unlike winter comfort food, it shows off spring produce perfectly and is enlivened by winter citrus. Last week I made Nigella Lawson's Lemon Risotto; this woman really can do no wrong when it comes to comfort foods, this was gorgeous lovely creamy lemon offset by hints of earthiness with the addition of fresh rosemary. Here's a link to the lovely recipe Nigella Lawson's Lemon Risotto. Last night the risotto love continued with something I had been itching to make forever but had never found a recipe that met my needs: Asparagus Risotto. My first encounter with Asparagus Risotto was with Trader Joe's frozen Asparagus Risotto, which I will say is lovely, but expensive for such a small amount and so the years have gone by with me looking for the perfect Asparagus Risotto recipe, when a few weeks the perfect recipe fell into my lap, provided by the awesome website http://www.simplyrecipes.com/. And here is the recipe that last night the ended my quest for an Asparagus risotto recipe: Asparagus Risotto.

Just a note to those making risotto, always make way more stock than is called for or have hot water on hand, the arborio rice you buy will vary highly in how much stock it takes to cook. In both recipes I used Trader Joe's arborio rice and it required much more liquid than the recipes called for.

Wish to some day get a hold of other Italian rice varieties that are used in risotto.

Also the Asparagus Risotto truly shows off the wonder of risotto in that it can be so creamy with no cream added.

The season changes the tea changes

On the most part I am the sort of tea lover that needs a cup of malty assam in the morning with a splash of milk or the wonderfully malty and spicy mix of Masala Chai with milk. There is something luxurious in seeing the transformation of dried tea leaves unfurl and create an elixir, that I will admit I am addicted too. Still my variety of tea changes through out the year, in the dead of winter smoky Russian Caravan and exceptionally malty Irish Breakfast grab me ( I still keep my Assam through out the year). Yet with the coming of spring and summer my tea has to change, that is when I change over to green teas and my favorite is the Japanese blend Genmai Cha. This I will say is more a spring tea than a summer tea in that it features a very unique ingredient that warms a drinker up on cool spring days: roasted kernals of rice. The roastiness of this tea is exceptional, it is comforting and soothing, and on cool days of spring it warms, yet it's lovely jade green color reminds you of the new spring greenery surrounding you.

It is also a lovely broth for breakfast rice. I admit I often have leftover rice from the night before and a perfect way too use it up is to warm it up, pour Genmai Cha on top, and add a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and a sprinkle of salt. It is a comforting and light morning breakfast that is great option for those that do not like sweet nor heavy breakfasts.

SOTD: White Moss

Today I am waiting for my new full size mattress to arrive and with a window of 9 am to 1 pm I haven't really had the time for a shower, so I have opted for the ever refreshing and cool-headed scent of Acca Kappa White Moss. Believe after gets I am taking a shower; I have spent my morning moving around large pieces of furniture and did work up a sweat. Besides I want a warmer more sensual scent for later on; the skies are grey today and will most definately let out rain later on.

SOTD: Allure Sensuelle pure parfum

The lovely sunny spring weather has turned to rainy spring weather. Going through my scent wardrobe I was tempted to bring out my heavy oriental hitters: Organza Indecence, Must, or Un Bois Vanille. But the reality is I simply have come to that time of the year that even when it is cold outside spring is still very visibly here and no autumnal/winter scents are what I want to wear. So instead I am going with Allure Sensualle pure parfum (the only strength of Allure Sensualle I wear), which is very much a floriental scent yet the patchouli used in it has a cool earthy quality to it that makes it appropiate for spring weather. I almost dismissed this image as being to much in the mode of bodice-ripper, but I love the fact that the model is short haired, that is she not the "ideal" of beauty, but she has contemplative alluring quality on her face that well the more I look at the image the more I am drawn to it.

SOTD: Bvlgari pour Femme

A couple weeks ago there was the question of joyous/happy scents going around the perfume community, I could not come up with one (what can I say I'm some one who usual goes with comfort and sensual scents), but today I realized that I do have one: Bvlgari pour Femme. There is something joyously yellow about this scent, it reminds me of blooming yellow mimosa and acacia (although it does not smell like either of these). There is a nectourous quality it smells of jasmine tea, honey, and bizarrely for the first time this morning I realized that I smelled a hint of juicy sweet bartlett pear in it. What is unique is that with a heart of powedery rose and violet, it retains crystilline nectar quality at the same time.

SOTD: Light Blue

As the sunday tradition continues I go with an easy casual scent and Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue is the epitome of just that. The scent is bright and refreshing, but as it dries down on me becomes a rather delicious lemon cream scent. Perfect for summer and spring and early autumn.

I love it! I got at Target yesterday. It is by the Dwell Studio collection.

SOTD: Midnight Orchid

Today I am sampling Susanna Lang's Midnight Orchid, at first it starts off very much reminiscent of the vanilla used in Un Bois Vanilla, but as the drydown is progressing, the florals are coming out and I am rather enjoying this one. It is becoming drier and more floral.

His and Her's

I admit I am fascinated by the concept of complimentary female and male fragrances. Although, I will add before going on that I fully support men and women going across the gender lines of perfume and wearing exactly what they want. And now back to his and her's fragrances, the fact is rarely do designers actually come out with his and her's scents that actually complement each other. So I have decided to propose my combinations that actually compliment each other from the catergories of male and female fragrance and I fully support the crossing of gender lines with these fragrances.

Bvlgari pour Homme Soir and Prada Infusion d'Iris

I would have never smelled the similarities of these two fragrances had my boyfriend not bought himself Bvlgarie pour Homme Soir on a whim. In fact I will say this on a paper strip these don't smell alike all, but once on the skin do they begin to share magical similarities. The magic note that brings them together: papyrus. Infusion d'Iris has always reminded me of the scent of papyrus but papyrus is not one of its listed notes, I suspect that Infusion d'Iris achieves this quality with the mixing of iris and vetiver. As for Bvlgarie pour Homme Soir well the papyrus note is achieved because papyrus is one of its notes.

The differences between these two are as interesting as their similarities. Infusion d'Iris remains through out its process to drydown with hints of green sap to complement the dryness of the iris and vetiver blend. Where as Bvlgari pour Homme Soir hints at the lightest fougere notes and dark violets surrounding a powdery grey iris note.

These two scents achieve a lovely cool elegance that is perfect for a spring and can easily be worn by either sex.

Official notes for both fragrances:

Infusion d'Iris: Galbanum, Mandarin Orange, Orange Blossom, Lentisk, Iris, Cedar, Vetiver, Benzoin, Frankincense

Bvlgari pour Homme Soir: Bergamot, Darjeeling Tea, Papyrus, Musk, Amber.

Lost Blogging

It's that time again where I blog about the show that holds me enthralled and while I am enthralled I am sampling Frederic Malle's L'eau d'Hiver (reminds me of something from my childhood, a pure clean sweet comforting scent) and L'Artisan Vanilia (utterly unimpressed, not the smoky vanilla I was looking for, has become a rather doughy heliotrope on me, and has a weird harsh starting).

Let the Losting Begin:

I will admit I really like Charlotte's hair
Well this has to be Juliet of the old with that bizarre weave.
An island therapist? Heh.
Ben with flowers? And checking out Juliet's ass?!
And the shoe drops and Juliette doesn't realize it.
Juliet's hair is looking really good also
And now for our favorite weird whispery jungle and Harper the therapist.
And why is the first time we have seen her amongst the others?
So the whispers are a magical transportation device?
Yick! And this how her affair with Goodwin starts, electric fence burn.
And Harper's his wife and I have to say I'm going to go with Juliet's gut instinct about Harper
Chemical burn!
Why is Juliet following Ben's orders?! She knows he is an evil douche
What is the island with people with insanely gorgeous sweaty hair?
Oh Kate you know that they totally escaped?
And Charlotte is biotch with gorgeous hair. This actually could be the summery for almost every character on the island.
Ben is trying to make the moves, but Godwin already has.
Harper looks like Priscilla Presley and now she reveals Ben's stupid crush on Juliet
Mr. Clean is gutting a rabbit
Claire are you finally getting a clue? And possibly showing your sly side? Claire now seeming kind've awesome
What the heck has Ben been doing to the rabbits other scaring them to death?
Good grief is Ben the King of Manipulation and for once Locke isn't falling for it.
And the only bottle of wine on the island is being used for Goodwin and Juliet's tryst
Don't you question why Ben has you working with chemicals Goodwin?
Priscilla Presley is not happy.
I wonder how long it is going to take for skinny jeans to hit the island?
And now Juliet has run off.
Oh Locke why are you being a dumbass?
And now for movie time; which Locke usually makes very amusing
There's Widmore and it's like Locke's not so spiritually insane twin.
Of course it's like Jurassic Park, Widmore wants to make the island the disney of healing retreats, which goes horribly wrong when he realizes he can't control smoke monster.
Well we now Kate got off the Island knowing that her criminal past was well documented with the boaties.
Ben in dork mode. Is that ham? And that is a lot of dinner rolls.
Hmm, answers about the tailie children.
Ben doing his old manipulation spell.
Faraday have been taking the stupid gas?
I want that puppy
Wow ABC is full of it with this commercial
Please Faraday do your thing and Juliet kick Charlotte's ass.
I love this strange little whispy man
And what is Ben up to? Oh good grief he is going to show dead Goodwin and moldy
He is heartless and Juliet is finally realizing it.
Because Ben is psycho so very very psycho.
And finally someone else on the Island is kissing, Jack and Juliet really should be together.
Love me some Hurley and Sawyer interaction and and psycho has been let of the basement.

SOTD: Mille et Une Roses

The image above is by one of my favorite illustrators, Kinuko Y. Craft, in fact I actually do have a poster of the image of above, she created it for Patricia McKillip's Song of the Basilisk. I cannot think of a better modern pairing of illustrator and writer, Craft's dreamy baroque illustrations complement McKillip's beautiful strange dream world language. I admit I think I have bought books because of Craft's lovely illustrations. The scent I chose to go with today perfectly complements Craft's illustrations: Mille et Une Roses, a heavenly dreamy rose.

SOTD: Do Son by Diptyque

I can't explain the need for a white floral right now, I suspect once again it is the season, to simply put it Spring scents are the least loved in my collection and yet all the sudden I am wanting the scent of cool white florals and sappy new greens. I am mostly a child of winter and autumn scents, so this is a new one for me. Today I am sampling Diptyque's ode to tuberose and childhood: Do Son. Later on today when I stop at the mall to order contacts I will be trying Private Collection Gardenia Tuberose. Spring fever has definately hit and hopefully the stuffy nose caused by spring allergies won't be to awful this year.
