Scenting the Women of Mad Men: Joan Holloway

I first began to think about this project during the first season of Mad Men when Roger Sterling comments to the epitome of curvacious, voluptous, and buxom Joan Holloway that she "...smells amazing." At first I thought Shalimar might be the scent to fit Joan, but I realized it didn't seem like the right fit, it then occured to me I wanted a scent that Joan could get for herself and that was new, it then occurred to me that the perfect fit was the spicy wonder of Estee Lauder's Youth Dew; striking, spicy, scintillating, and very womanly.

Hi- I really enjoy your blog and I also love guessing what scents characters in film/ tv/ books might wear.

I think Youth Dew is a great choice- for some reason I think it's a good scent for someone with that strawberry to red hair colour.

Thank you Rose! Spicy scents can be so lovely on red-toned hair even if Chypre is the constant recommendation for them.

Yes I think red and spicy go well! it must be a bit tedious if you're a red head and people always suggest the chypres for you.

Although that said if I had dark red hair for a night I would probably wear a green dress and some mitsouoko.

They actually mentioned Joan using Shalimar. When she and her room mate, Carol, were going out together, Joan asks Carol to zip her up, Carol asks if she used Shalimar, and then declared her love.

I don't really know perfumes but I am enjoying what you wrote.

Well, now I feel like a dork, but turns out my gut instinct the first time is right, but still I think Youth Dew is more appropiate. Glad you are enjoying the reading.

I don't know, that is a tough call. Jenavira - what about something by Hanae Nori? Or am I off? Just found the blog, love it. Just wanted to try and throw in my two cents :)

Hi Jen, Thank you so much for checking out the blog. As for Hanae Mori; was she producing perfumes back then? I have only smelled Hanae Mori's Butterfly and Magical Moon and they just don't seem to fit for the character of Joan. Well the Butterfly might fit Joan when she is at home with her fiancee in that one scene in the Mariyln Monroe episode. But then again that scene is her being completely out of character.
